Exiles On Off Off Broadway

by Gregory Severance

Sadie Hawkins aloof
wanders side streets around Broadway
wild eyes wide
among teeming teenage throng
girls and boys
wear matching jackets
Her jacket matches nothingness
lexical exile

license plates from southern states
under hawk moon
dawgs dyed dark green
howl at the sad, evil-eyed
bald eagle sopranoes
camping on Cornelia Street

out back in the bog
Daffie and Dillie
chew Red Man
whip up crawfish pie
fatback and biscuits
red hot chili
so lonesome they could cry
their lives saved
by rock and roll
by their time of day
by a couple of deals
before dawn
